Review of 'Future Days': The Last of Us Season 2 First Episode on Afdah

The Last of Us Season 2 First Episode on Afdah

"Promise me that everything you told me about the Fireflies is true," Ellie (Bella Ramsey) asks Joel (Pedro Pascal) in the opening scene of the second season of The Last of Us afdah, which also serves as the concluding scene of the first season. "I promise," Joel responds. In the silent moments that follow, before Ellie finally says, "Okay," and they make their way to the settlement in Jackson, Wyoming, she takes time to reflect. However, the expression on her face indicates that she indeed trusts the man who has become her surrogate father and has guided her through the devastated landscape of a Cordyceps-infected America. This trust carries significant weight, and their relationship could shift dramatically if that trust were to falter.

The repetition of this scene hints that, although the narrative primarily unfolds five years after the first season's events, the past will significantly influence "Future Days," the premiere of the second season, and likely extend beyond this episode. The subsequent scene reinforces this notion. While Joel converses with Ellie, a contrasting somber moment occurs in Salt Lake City, where the young survivors of Joel's Firefly massacre mourn their losses and attempt to comprehend the events that transpired.

Ellie resumes her characteristic sarcasm as she and the others receive patrol instructions from Joel. While on the trail, Dina playfully teases Ellie about the upcoming dance, questioning whether she plans to attend with her ex, Kat (Noah Lamanna), who is also part of the patrol. Dina suggests that she and Ellie could go to the dance together, especially since she is currently single after her recent breakup with Jesse (again). However, before Ellie can respond, they encounter a more pressing issue: the aftermath of an infected attack outside a supermarket. The bodies of several infected are scattered outside, alongside the remains of a bear. Ignoring protocol, Dina and Ellie decide to investigate what lies within the store.

The Roses 2025 – When Silence Says More Than Words
